Southern Home Plans
To accommodate the warm, humid air of Southern climates, Southern house plans are sprawling and airy with tall ceilings, large front porches, usually built of wood. A wrap-around porch provides shade to escape the Southern heat during the day. Pitched or gabled roofs typical of Southern home designs are usually medium or shallow in height, often with dormers. Southern house plans have warmth and a historical connection that few styles can match. The grand, pre-Civil War home styles of the South still inspire us today. We are drawn to the regal elements, such as balconies, columns, grand staircases, deep porches, and elaborate cornices that make a house plan quintessentially Southern and lend themselves to nostalgia and lasting appeal. Southern home designs feature majestic, symmetrical exteriors outfitted in classical style. The Louisiana Creole and low country (South Carolina and vicinity) styles are often topped by a metal roof, giving them a distinctive appearance.
